Integrated laboratory for the study of materials and surfaces of the cultural heritage

The MIDAr research group results from a 10 years-long collaboration among researchers of the Politecnico di Milano, working in the field of materials science, diagnostics, physics and photonics for cultural heritage.

The group was born “on the field”, as a result of the increasing investigation activity by non-destructive and micro-destructive techniques, carried out over the years to support national and international conservation intervention. It also developed specific research projects in collaboration with conservators, restorers, private contractors and public authorities.

Nowadays, MIDAr is a highly innovative research group focused on the study of polychrome works of art, monuments and historic buildings, sculpted masterpieces, metal artefacts and design objects. The research activity is carried out by two laboratories fully equipped for the characterization and monitoring of materials of the cultural heritage:
